What happens to your food waste, currently?
Your waste is sent directly to a landfill, where it is mixed in with other waste. The EPA estimates that 24% of the waste in municipal landfills is food waste.
Food waste sits in landfills, taking up a significant amount of space and releasing methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
By diverting your food waste to a recycling facility, you’re directly helping to mitigate this effect and giving your food waste new life.
So Why BUGS?
At BUGS, we use Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) to process your food waste. This method differs significantly from other food waste composting services that primarily utilize anaerobic digestion.
This means that your food waste is being turned into animal feed & fertilizer through the BSFL, recycling the nutrients from your food, back into your food!
*As we are just starting out, some of the larger quantities of food waste we collect are processed at Trenton Renewables, a large-scale anaerobic digestion facility. If you are curious about your waste, reach us at info@bugscompost.com!
Our Mission
We see a future where all food waste is recycled, not just with BSFL, but with any method that restores more nutrients back into your food and reduces the amount of methane we release into our atmosphere.
As part of this larger goal, we believe that the empowerment of local non-profits and community organizations is key to achieving this goal. By spreading awareness and cooperation at the local levels, we can work to collect all food waste and prevent it from ever entering a landfill.
